I do not remember which. Also please note that the translations in this document for character names, items, etc are the ones used in the English translation patch I created, which is available at http://agtp.romhack.net ---------------- 1.0 Introduction ---------------- This is a FAQ/Walkthrough for Clock Tower: The First Fear for the Super Famicom/Super NES. While The First Fear was, in fact, rereleased on the PlayStation, I have not played that version and as such I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this FAQ pertaining to it. However, I can assure you that the information contained herein is as accurate as I can make it, and it should help you through the game (or so I'd hope, anyway!) For the uninformed or casual reader, Clock Tower: The First Fear is the prequel to the PlayStation game we know simply as Clock Tower (which the Japanese know as Clock Tower 2.) The First Fear is heretofore unavailable in English, however a translation patch for the Super Famicom/SNES version is forthcoming and should be completed soon. As not to spoil any of the game, I will attempt to stay away from plot points whenever possible (the game's opening aside) however due to the nature of the way the game determines which ending you get, that may not be 100% possible. The character list is somewhat thin on details partly due to this and partly due to the fact that there really isn't much for character development at all. One of the neat things about Clock Tower is the randomization aspect. A few of the items can be found in different locations when you start the game, the ceremony room puzzle has two different incarnations, some of the danger spots aren't -always- danger spots, some of the safe spots aren't -always- safe spots, and the entire west wing (with the exception of the far right part of floor 2 and the ceremony chamber) has a tendancy to shuffle itself around each time you play. This makes it rather difficult to explain in a walkthrough, but I'll do my best! --------- 1.1 Story --------- Jennifer Simpson and her three friends Ann (the brunette), Laura (the blonde) and Lotte (the redhead) have recently been adopted by Simon Barrows, who lives in an elaborate mansion somewhere in Norway. After being led to the mansion by a Ms. Mary, the kids sit in the main foyer while Mary goes to fetch Mr. Barrows. When Ms. Mary is away for a number of minutes ("She's been gone an awfully long time..."), Jennifer offers to go look for her. No sooner than she enters the next hall does she hear a scream from the foyer! Rushing back, the finds the lights out and the foyer deserted. Hoping this is some elaborate joke, Jen begins to look for the girls.... -------------- 1.2 Characters -------------- Jennifer Simpson - The main character, adopted by Simon Barrows out of the Granite Orphanage. She is the player's alterego in the game. Ms. Mary - A woman whom the former orphans look up to. She leads them to the Barrows Family Mansion. Ann - One of Jen's friends. The brunette. Lotte - One of Jen's friends. The redhead. Laura - One of Jen's friends. The blonde. Bobby Barrows - The more "normal" of the Barrows twins. You'll know him when you see him. Dan Barrows - The more... unusual of the Barrows twins. Simon Barrows - The owner of the Barrows Family Mansion. ------------ 1.3 Controls ------------ Clock Tower - The First Fear does not support the SNES mouse. Sorry. Control Pad: Move cursor. A Button: Hold and use the control pad to cycle through your inventory. B Button: Panic Button. Hit it as fast as you can when Jen's portrait flashes! X Button: Stops Jennifer. Y Button: Press on Jen's left to have her walk left, on her right to have her walk right. Double-tap to run. When the cursor morphs into a box, use press to have Jen examine/manipulate its target. L Button: Have Jen run left. R Button: Have Jen run right. Select Button: Unused, to my knowledge. Start Button: Pause the game. -------------- 1.4 Game Modes -------------- There are three main modes in Clock Tower: "Normal" Mode, "Chase" Mode, and "Panic" Mode. In Normal Mode, the objective is to locate your three friends and escape from the mansion. During Chase Mode, your objective is to flee from whatever might be chasing you. All of the "safe spots" are listed in Appendix D, but it's a lot more thrilling to find them yourself. You'll know if you're in Chase Mode, because (with two or three exceptions) it's the only time that music will be playing. During Panic Mode, Jennifer's portrait will be flashing. Hit the B button as fast as you can to survive Panic Mode. A note about Jennifer's health: Your health is shown by the color of Jennifer's portrait. When it's blue, you're in very good (or perfect) health. When it's yellow, you're in good health. When it's orange, you're in bad health, and when it's red you're in very bad/near death status. RUNNING WILL DEPLETE JENNIFER'S HEALTH! To recover your heatlh, you can sometimes take a drink from the shelf in the kitchen, or you can simply hit the X button a few times and wait. Jennifer will sit down and her health will slowly recharge. You only need to be in orange health or better in very few parts of the game (these will be marked) so feel free to run anyway. --------- 1.5 Items --------- In this section you shall find a list of all of the items and where to find them. Their uses will either be described in the walkthrough or in the Puzzle Solutions appendix. Black Robe - Found in the Armor Room OR the attic. Cage Key - On the bench in the Cage Room. Car Key - Found in a box in the garage. Ceremony Key - On the toy chest in the child's bedroom. Copper Key - In the hole in the wall in the library. Demon Idol - Second statue past the hole in the far right hall on floor 2, west wing, IF you found a note on the second bookshelf from the left in the library. Gold Key - In the meat locker in the kitchen. Ham - Found in the refridgerator in the kitchen. Insecticide - Found in the attic. Lantern - On the desk in the study IF the window is broken. Perfume - Found in the master bedroom. Check the drawers on which the picture sits. Rock - Found in a pile of rubble in a collapsed hallway near the start point. Rope - Found in the attic OR the storage room. Knife - ????? (It's in the script, at least... see Appendix G.) Silver Key - Underneath the glass in the Armor Room. Staff - Behind the curtain in the music room IF the ceiling panel does not fall. West Wing Key - In the box in the living room OR in the nest in the attic hall. The following will NOT appear in your inventory and will be automatically used: West Wing Key Gold Key Ceremony Key Silver Key --------------- 2.0 Walkthrough --------------- This section will guide you through the game, as spoiler-free as possible, to each of the endings. NOTE: Many of the endings are repetitive; you'll see a lot of copy/pasting between them. NOTE: During the West Wing part of the walkthrough (where applicable) the only rooms that don't move are the Storage Room, Sealed Room, Study, Child's Room, and Ceremony Room. The Music Room (distinguished by a piano), Library (distinguished by four bookcases), Second Bathroom (a pinkish-hued bathroom with a box in it), Cage Room (with a cage on the left hand wall) and Unenterable Room (which you can't even select) tend to swap places with each other. As such, I will simply refer to the room names. Just check every room in order that you come to. The following rooms are constant: Ceremony Room (WW Main Hall, F1, Middle door) Child's Room (WW Main Hall, F2, Middle door) Study (WW Main Hall, F2, Right-hand door) Storage Room (WW Far-Right Hall, Right-hand door) NOTE: The Mural Room and the Armor Room also tend to swap places, as do the Trophy Room and Mannequin Room (although they do not need to be visited during any of the endings and are simply there for spice.) NOTE: All of the walkthroughs are based on the Quick Start option. The opening is not needed if you can't read Japanese and is described in the story section anyway. NOTE: For every ending other than H, S, and maybe A, the route names are who you see first. For S and maybe A, the route names are who you see -last.- It may be confusing at first, but it works out for the best in the end (and you'll see why if you're actually playing the game and not just reading along.) NOTE: This walkthrough is as bare-bones as they come. Its purpose is soley to activate all of the endings in your Ending List. To get the full experience of the game and see all of the scenes, you are encouraged to play through the game on your own and let things happen. The solutions to all of the puzzles I can think of are in Appendix F, the "keys" to the endings are listed in Appendix B, but the scenes that can happen intermittently which are seen are entirely up to you, the player, and your actions. ------------ 2.1 Ending H ------------ -Go to the left into the short hall. -Go further left into F1 Hall. -Go into the second (middle) door. (This is the Master Bedroom.) -Check the bird cage. (You'll need orange or better health if you want to survive.) -Quickly check the covers on the right hand bed. -Return to F1 Hall. -Go all the way left into Great Hall 2. -Run back to the Master Bedroom (middle door in F1 Hall) and check the left bed to evade. -Run -all- the way to the left, through the Great Hall 2, through the Kitchen Hall, into the garage. -Check the box near the car. -Use the Car Key on the car three times. END ------------ 2.2 Ending G ------------ ANN ROUTE -Go to the left into the short hall. -Go further left into F1 Hall. -Go into the second (middle) door. (This is the Master Bedroom.) -Check the bird cage. There's a door (it's one of the *3 rooms on the map) which can't be opened, can't even be selected! Where does it lead, and why can you not select it? 2) The Mysterious Unfindable Knife! Well, in the game's script, there's a knife which doesn't appear to exist in the game itself. The word is that it's found in the trophy room in the remake, and can be used to kill a zombie for a key or something. Weird 3) The Copper Key! If you were playing the Laura games, chances are that you found the lantern and the copper key. Damned if I know what it goes to. I've heard that it might go to the cell in the shed if there's nobody in it.... UPDATE: It turns out that you can use it in the cell, if you're inside it with Simon. This will make it so that Lotte doesn't have to save you... But you still need to find her in the Caves, or you'll get ending F. There doesn't appear to be a way to save her :| 4) The Rope! Well, you can supposedly use it on the statue in West Wing Floor 2 Right-Hand Hall, but the game's never let me do it and I don't see any situation where it'd be necessary.
